A Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA) is a registered investment or savings account that allows for tax free gains on your investments. The maximum amount you can contribute to your TFSA is limited by your TFSA contribution room.
The annual limit is determined by the Government of Canada; however, since the contribution room is cumulative and can be carried forward indefinitely, your personal contribution room may fluctuate each year depending on your contribution history.
Unlike the RRSP, any amount you withdraw from your TFSA in a particular year is automatically added to your TFSA contribution room for the following year.
You can find out this year’s contribution limit by visiting the Government of Canada website.
You can view your personal contribution limit by logging into My Account or MyCRA on the CRA website and checking under Savings Plans.
